I have a feeling they know what they have in this guy and they'll resign him. I think this is why we haven't seen more O-line moves thinking they are going to use the money to sign key guys like him.
I agree, I don't see them letting him get away ala' Johnson or Whosyerdaddy etc...

Last estimate I saw we were still 18mil over the cap btw.
While I tend to agree with both of you, after the Carl Lawson saga this offseason, I won't feel sure about it til his name is signed on the dotted line.
Like B1 said fair point, but do you feel the organization didn't valued Lawson as much as they value Bates? My only push back would be that they value this guy more. Here's to hoping they do ...

Assuming this is accurate it means they're at least trying...

He was undrafted and hadn't been charged with anything until he was arrested this past weekend for "hitting a man repeatedly".

No penalties expected from the NFL due to it happening in 2019, though if he has any future trouble, this transgression could be factored into punishment.

As an undrafted free agent, he is currently one of 23 defensive linemen and linebackers on the roster. I'd imagine he had a pretty uphill climb to make the roster even before this happened.

As a "Bengals story", this is practically a non-story other than the fact that some people just love to hear the Bengals mentioned with legal troubles.

He's been an average player at best the last few years, but having said that, he's better than half the guys we have at Linebacker right now. I'd happily bring in an average Linebacker to replace a terrible Linebacker.

Cincinnati named NFL's worst travel destination for fans
By Chris Roling | July 10, 2021

Where does the city of Cincinnati rank as far as NFL fan experiences goes?

According to one writer, the home of the Bengals ranks dead last of all NFL locales.

Ben Volin of the Boston Globe set out to rank every NFL destination in the country and slapped the Bengals last, writing the following:

“30. Cincinnati: The ribs at Montgomery Inn are great. And you can stay across the river in Covington to cross Kentucky off your list of states visited. But there’s not much going on in downtown Cincinnati, the stadium has no tailgating space, and Bengals games are rarely exciting.“

This is the sort of offseason list that generates controversy, of course. While Bengals fans and others rightfully have their gripes with the overall experience and personality of Paul Brown Stadium itself, ranking it dead last seems like quite an exaggeration.

Keep in mind something here — writers show up, get a hotel, eat, cover a game and leave. Unless the author spent expansive time in the local area, he or she only gets a snapshot of what a city has to offer before going back home.

Still, it’s odd to see Cincinnati land last and makes for an interesting summer conversation, if nothing else.

No way Green Bay is not dead last on that list

Copy and paste from the 90s? "Bengals games are rarely exciting"? Has he not heard of Joe Burrow?

Trust me, Charlotte NC is WAAAAAYYYY worse in terms of activities to do in and around town. But, if the writer is putting the emphasis on tailgating then the Panthers fans certainly do a great job of that. Cincy is a great town but you do have to know where to go and it often isn't right in downtown.
You guys are going go be severely disappointed at the team they've put together this year. Severely disappointed. - Joe Bananas 8/18/2025
