NFL tables proposed 4th & 15 onside kick option...

3 minutes of googling turned up the following success rates for onside kicks:
In 2017: 21%
In 2018: 8%
2019: (didn't find full season data, but...) 6% through week 11

The rule changes between 2017 and 2018 have made it really unlikely that anyone's going to recover an onside kick. I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of the ones that were successful the last two seasons were of the unexpected variety (2nd half kickoff or whatever).

I don't disagree with the basic goal of the changes to try to make kickoffs less dangerous, but it's a shame to take that bit of hope and excitement out of the game by making it almost impossible. 4th and 15 seems to make sense--from what I was seeing from an analysis in 2016, the conversion rate for 4th and 15 in the NFL is right around 20%. So it would get us back to the unlikely-but-not-that-unlikely chance to get the ball back.

I've suspected for a while now that this is basically a "prove it" year from the Bengals. They think he might turn out to be really good, but he hasn't shown enough at this point to get the long-term. They brought in a lot of corners this off-season, I'd expect it to be a pretty competitive room--some will stick and some won't. I'd love to see WJIII earn it this year.
