Agree with Meat. They already have the money available to sign a Guard or Safety of the quality of players that are currently available.

If this isn't freeing up money for a Hendrickson extension, I don't know what it could be.
This seems to be the consensus of the Cincy sports writers as well.

The Bengals just don't sign 32-year-old none OL/QB players to big contracts. Give me one example in Bengals history where they have? It is why their dead cap hit is 31st in the NFL this year.
The Bengals have done a lot of things in the past few years they just don't do in the past.
Such as?

They have always been willing to QB and young WR lots of money.

Also did some research there are almost no DE that are highly effective at 32 or older why would Hendrickson be different than 95+% of the players. When paying the big three this much cannot afford to have dead cap space or large portion of the cap space on IR.

The amount of spending they've done for both Higgins and Chase, the Guarantee money on contracts, Signing guys like DJ Reader. Others as well just can't think of them off the top of my head.

The last two times a new pope was elected - in 2013 and 2005 - the Bengals won the division.

Paul Dehner Jr. @pauldehnerjr
A few notes from Zac Taylor, who met with the media after the #Bengals rookie mini-camp field work this morning (they only do one day for one hour, rest is off the field).

- Shemar Stewart and Demetrius Knight Jr. watched on the side as the only two picks that haven’t yet signed: “They are just working through their contracts right now. They’ve had a great attitude and I’m excited about both of those guys.”

- No update on Trey Hendrickson. No thoughts on Burrow's suit from the Met Gala. Did reiterate it was great to have Burrow out throwing the last two days.

- Taylor stressed they only do one day on the field with players with focus on acclimation this weekend over everything. Not about evaluation in the least: “Everybody learns in different ways. I don’t hold that over anybody.”

- Really entire offseason program, not just today, is about acclimation and preparation for training camp: “The goal is coming out of the offseason program in mid-June these guys have all the information, they know how to drill it, they know the techniques, then can spend the summer evaluating themselves and getting ready for training camp. When they come into training camp they can hit the ground running.”

- Said excited for competition everywhere, that includes long snapper with Michigan’s William Wagner competing with Cal Adomitis.

Hendrickson confirmed today the Bengals have had NO communication with him during or since the draft. And he sounds a bit pissed. And rightly so.

Squeeze play underway here. And it will likely end up with Trey playing elsewhere this year once he finally digs in against Katie.
You guys are going go be severely disappointed at the team they've put together this year. Severely disappointed. - Joe Bananas 8/18/2025

Zero surprise the Bengals have zero history of paying a 32-year-old defensive player (non OL/QB) big money. It is why they are 31st in the league in dead cap space. Plus, there is almost zero history in the NFL of a 32-year-old DE end being a high-end player.

I don't see him sitting out a year at his age.

I agree he will play for the Bengals this coming season. He has 16 million reasons to play.
