Re: Bengals Related News & Notes
The Cincinnati Bengals have officially announced their 2023 undrafted free agents class.
It took a little longer than expected while some pending medicals and other housekeeping items cleared, but these are the officially announced names:
OL Jaxson Kirkland
S Larry Brooks III
TE Christian Trahan
RB Jacob Saylors
WR Shedrick Jackson
LB Jaylen Moody
RB Calvin Tyler Jr.
WR Malachi Carter
WR Mac Hippenhammer
LB Shaka Heyward
DT Devonnsha Maxwell
LB Tyler Murray
DT Tautala Pesefea
A handful of the names were already working at Bengals rookie minicamp this week before the announcement from the team.
Many of the names appeared on the Bengals undrafted free agency tracker. Offensive lineman Jaxson Kirkland might be the biggest name and has a nice shot at making the final roster.

Hamilton County and Bengals will the split some of the money from this weekend’s concerts. Great for the Bengals extension fund.

Brian Callahan: This is best offensive line we’ve had since I joined the Bengals
By Josh Alper Published June 30, 2023
The Bengals have put a lot of effort into finding the right players to protect quarterback Joe Burrow and offensive coordinator Brian Callahan thinks they’ve hit on the right combination.
Left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. joined the team as a free agent this offseason and Jonah Williams is now ticketed for right tackle after initially requesting a trade in the wake of Brown’s arrival. Left guard Cordell Volson should improve on a good rookie season and center Ted Karras and right guard Alex Cappa give the Bengals a pair of experienced starters on the interior.
“I think it’s safe to say it’s the best group from top to bottom that we’ve had in our time here,” Callahan said on the Locked on Bengals podcast, via SI.com. “I just feel really good about the direction we’re headed, the players we’ve added and the players that we have.”
The Bengals have veteran depth in players like La’el Collins, Max Scharping, and Cody Ford as well, so they should be able to weather some storms up front without springing too many leaks that would endanger Burrow’s availability.

But we can all admit they are not afraid to spend money and change that position group. It seems to be a top priority and it also seems that it's should be a strong position group this year.

Is Joe Burrow waiting for Justin Herbert to do his deal?
By Mike Florio Published July 2, 2023
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts and Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson have gotten new contracts this offseason. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert and Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow have not.
Is Burrow waiting for Herbert to do his deal before Burrow does his? Paul Dehner, Jr. of TheAthletic.com believes that’s one of the factors delaying Burrow’s deal.
Frankly, it shouldn’t be. Burrow and Herbert occupy different planes. Herbert is irrelevant to Burrow. The only reason for Burrow to wait would be to see whether Herbert gets more than expected, which would raise the floor considerably for Burrow.
If Burrow goes first, it’s hard to imagine Herbert getting as much or more. Frankly, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the Chargers wait a year to do Herbert’s deal. He doesn’t seem to be wired to whine about it, and the Chargers could be inclined to take advantage of one more relatively low-cost year under Herbert’s rookie deal before paying him. Especially if Herbert isn’t inclined to complain.
Regardless, Burrow should break the bank sooner than later — and then some. He should have a compensation package tied to a percentage of the salary cap. Actually, he should get whatever he wants. He has transformed a Bengals team that, without him, was the gang that couldn’t shoot straight. If he ever leaves, they could go back to being what they were before they stunk badly enough in 2019 to get him.
