It pains me to agree with you on your first day back :D but I would be surprised if first pick isn't a DB or DL.
Sorry, I don't see them going DB with their first pick either.

DT, DE or maybe LB.

I'd be pretty surprised at any other position frankly.

I know I'm a homer for Ohio State but I really like Josh Simmons, knowing we could have him play guard and then move him out to tackle later. I really like Henderson and his ability to catch and block. I also really like Cody Simon's mobility and ability to cover sideline to sideline.
I just don't see us prioritizing the O-line over the Defense. Not with the 1st pick at any rate.

Let the bickering start early...
I do, I think they have faith in the DL and it's a very deep class for DL this year.

If they needed a Tackle or perhaps even a Center I'd agree with you. But I just don't see them spending a 1st rounder on a Guard.

Not at 17 anyway. If they trade back....? :?

Here's how I see it. Bengals logic, they signed that kid from Green Bay so they believe they have solidified that DL position. They may add a later day 2 or day 3 pick but probably not a lot more. I see them thinking maybe DE for pass rush, but this is a deep class for that so they will think they can get a solid pick on day 2. They want to protect JB, they also didn't add much OL help this year in FA because they feel like they will supplement this in the draft. I went with Simmons cause he's someone I like and can play both guard then transition to tackle later on when we can't extend Brown.

That's my thoughts behind that mock.

It's not a bad take, it just flys in the face of the teams history. Agree with it or not, the Bengals just don't value Safeties or Guards. That's what Poppa Brown taught SoP.

I do agree with you that their lack of action on Guards during FA would seem to indicate they planned on settling that position in the draft. It's another reason I can see them trading back into the mid-twenties and picking up additional picks.

The D-line was plaqued with injuries the past few years. Signing a new starter to replace one they let go isn't addressing the DT position anymore than signing just one Guard has "fixed" the O-line issue.

They need impact players on defense.....period. My guess is Hendrickson is going to be on the team this year. Most likely, if the can't reach a long term deal they'll tag him in 2026.

If Myles Murphy doesn't show up to the party soon DE becomes a priority pretty quickly.

They can use a DT, DE, G and LB. Those four positions would seem to be the priorities going into next weeks draft. Traditionally, they've valued D-linemen and Linebackers over Guards. Hell, they took Volson in the 4th round out of North Dakota A&P and plugged him into the starting Guard position and slapped themselves on the back for a job well done.

And let's be honest, this is not a club that learns it's lessons very quickly. If at all.

All very valid points however I would point out that in that mock I did have us trading back. This gives them the option to be able to do what I was thinking. I do believe they would take a 1st round guard, they have in the past it's just been a while. Secondly I'm saying that the pick would be guard initially but then transition into tackle long term which they do actually like to do. Not saying they've been successful at it.

From seeing who the Bengals have brought in on their 30 visits it seems like a day 2 DT is more likely. Which again leads to believe they are actually looking to trade down in the first to get another day 2 pick.

I would also point out that S is going to be a bit of a priority for them since they know they don't have one now that's very good.

Since 1968 the Bengals have drafted 1 G in the first round and that was Zeitler with pick 27 in 2012 and he wasn't their first pick in the draft that year.

I still stand with my prediction it will be a DL or DB. My interest in college football is so low now (only watched about 10 OSU games and that was about it) I couldn't hazard a guess who that might be.

How many Tackles have they taken in the first round? Folks seem to be focusing in on the word guard when I am talking more of a tackle that will play guard until they transition him into tackle. That's all I'm going to say on this.

I will meet you part way on this...

"If" they were to trade back into the late 20s, I could see them taking a Guard, whether he could transition over to Tackle or not. Especially, as you suggest, they are able to pick up an additional 2nd rounder. Then, again as you mention, use both 2nd rounders on Defense.

We'll just have see what happens on Draft night...
