53 Roster Projection

Post by 4256 Hits » Wed Aug 28, 2019 9:49 pm

Do you agree or disagree with the projection. I think go with four TE and three RB and Core gets last WR spot over Bryant.
QUARTERBACK (2): Andy Dalton, Ryan Finley

Finley’s strong performances throughout the preseason helped him secure the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. Finley sported the highest completion percentage of any Bengals quarterback this preseason and moved the offense effectively. The fourth-round pick will be called into action if anything happens to Dalton, who is entering his ninth season in Cincinnati.

RUNNING BACK (4): Joe Mixon, Giovani Bernard, Rodney Anderson, Trayveon Williams

Anderson and Williams, the two rookies drafted in the latter rounds this season, have made plays when they’ve been on the field. Anderson looks ready to go after recovering from an ACL injury, while Williams should be available for the start of the regular season after dealing with a foot injury.

WIDE RECEIVER (7): A.J. Green, John Ross, Tyler Boyd, Damion Willis, Auden Tate, Alex Erickson, Ventell Bryant

Green will start the season on the shelf while he recovers from an ankle injury. Willis, the undrafted free agent, will be his replacement for the season opener, according to coach Zac Taylor. Willis went from a bubble player to securing a spot before the preseason finale. Tate, a seventh-round pick in 2018, had a productive preseason with eight catches for 68 yards and a touchdown.

TIGHT END (3): Tyler Eifert, C.J. Uzomah, Drew Sample

This spot could grow to four, depending on what happens at other positions on the roster. Eifert and Uzomah will give the offense veteran targets at tight end. Once again, Eifert’s health will be something to watch after playing in just 14 games over the past three seasons. Sample, the Bengals’ second-round pick out of Washington, should get opportunities as well.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8): Cordy Glenn, Michael Jordan, Trey Hopkins, John Miller, Bobby Hart, Andre Smith, John Jerry, Billy Price

The offensive line produced the most competitive battles during the preseason, with left guard Jordan and center Hopkins earning starting spots. Price, last year’s starting center and a 2018 first-round pick, will be asked to give the Bengals depth along the interior. The veteran Smith serves as the primary backup tackle.

DEFENSIVE LINE (10): Geno Atkins, Andrew Billings, Ryan Glasgow, Carlos Dunlap, Carl Lawson, Andrew Brown, Jordan Willis, Renell Wren, Kerry Wynn, Sam Hubbard

This might be the deepest positional unit on the team. Willis, Wynn and Brown all brought pressure off the edge this preseason, which strengthened their arguments to make the roster. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Atkins will anchor the defense for another year and is arguably the best player on the roster.

LINEBACKER (6): Preston Brown, Nick Vigil, Germaine Pratt, Jordan Evans, Hardy Nickerson, Deshaun Davis

Cincinnati enters the year with a lot of questions around this unit. The Bengals will need better play from the linebackers to turn around what was one of the worst defenses in the NFL in 2018. Pratt (North Carolina State) has the potential to play himself into a starting spot by the end of his rookie season.

SECONDARY (10): Dre Kirkpatrick, William Jackson, Darius Phillips, Davontae Harris, B.W. Webb, Jordan Brown, Jessie Bates, Shawn Williams, Clayton Fejedelem, Brandon Wilson

The defensive backs feature Bates, the second-year safety who is one of the most promising players on the roster. Phillips brings value to the special teams unit in addition to depth at cornerback.

SPECIALISTS (3): K Randy Bullock, P Kevin Huber, LS Clark Harris

The Bengals brought another kicker to training camp (Tristan Vizcaino), but Bullock was accurate enough to lock down his roster spot.

Not many, if any, surprises here. I agree with Core being WR7 unless they can find someone they know on the waiver wire. It cant be hard surpassing Core's receiving skills. But its his ST play that keeps him on the roster.

Like I said earlier this week, our Oline is actually less of an issue than our LB corps. We've got enormous issues there.

I agree completely on the Lb. at least they tried to do something about OL in the offseason there was nothing done to improve lb play.

How fast things change. Anderson is gone (likely) with a re-tear of his ACL. Williams wont be ready for game 1. So the Bengals will be looking for another RB on cut down day.

The decision between Core and Malone is brutal. If you assume John Ross will be a lost cause you really should keep Malone to help replace his speed. But Core has looked decent this preseason and he's a ST staple. Tough call.

John Jerry looked awful at tackle last night. Probably some head scratching there as well.

Question on Cincy Jungle today is whether Dolegala makes the final roster.

The argument being that if we try to put him through waivers for the practice squad somebody might grab him. Especially someone like the Colts who also pursued signing him and have a bit of a QB issue. Not to mention saw his arm up close and personal last night.

The other argument being that Dalton hasn't been able to finish out the year because of injury and it doesn't hurt to have that third QB on the roster and if they have any belief that he can be groomed into something that Zac Taylor being the QB guy would want to keep him on the roster.

For what it's worth, QB ratings for the preseason - Dolegala - 100.1, Finley - 99.3, Dalton - 88.4, and Driskel - 47.8

They'll go 4, no more than 5 LBs. Not enough talent in that room to justify a 6th spot. They'll then keep an extra DL or WR to work a Trade for another LB or OT. Or the extra spot could go to Dolegala if they fear he won't pass waivers.

I also see them keeping 5 safeties and 5 CBs. The 5th S is Henderson. The team likes him and he plays well in the box as a nickle backer. Wilson can play a little corner, plus Denard is returning mid season.

QB: Dalton, Finely
RB: Mixon, Gio, Williams, Flowers
TE: Eifert, Usomah, Sample, Carter
WR: AJ, Boyd, Ross, Erickson, Willis, Tate, Core
OT: Glenn, Hart, Smith
G: Miller, Jordan, Jerry
C: Hopkins, Price

DE: Dunlap, Hubbard, Lawson, Wynn, Willis
DT: Atkins, Glasgow, Billings, Brown, Wren
LB: Vigil, Brown, Pratt, Evans, Davis
S: Bates, Williams, Wilson, Fejedelem, Henderson
CB: Jackson, Dre, Webb, Phillips, Lippet.

ST: status quo

That leaves one spot. I think they leave one or two spots open in hopes of finding upgrades at OT and LB.

I also expect to see Erickson and a DL available in trades. Phillips looks like a good returner, plus Ross is getting a lot of practice there. DL is deep. Jordan Willis is high on my list for a trade. He had a high draft grade and has shown flashes. There is a team or two that would like to get him. If Erickson is traded, look for Malone to get his spot.

Flowers is my 4th RB. While Ellis likely has the better grasp of the system, seen by his playing time over Flowers, he is just not a good enough athlete. Flowers showed burst and high upside with his athleticism. I'd love to see him as a personal protector on point team. Imagine the threat he'd be for fakes. He can not only run, but he can throw.

Brandon Marshall anyone? If he isnt fully healthy he might have 2-3 weeks to get there before we would start him anyway. Excellent insurance policy for sure.

I like Malcolm Smith better personally. Clearly the Raiders didn't see Marshall improving much.

Bengals’ first wave of roster cuts include Christian Westerman
By Jason Marcum@marcum89 Aug 30, 2019, 1:54pm EDT

The Bengals’ first round of cuts have come, and there were no real surprises.
On Friday afternoon, the team announced the following players had been waived:

LB Curtis Akins
C Kirk Barron
S Demetrious Cox
LS Dan Godsil
CB Tony Lippett
DT Dare Odeyingbo
DT Christian Ringo (injury settlement)
LB Sterling Sheffield
DE Immanuel Turner
K Tristan Vizcaino
G Christian Westerman

These moves leave the Bengals with 80 players on their active roster, including tight end Moritz Böhringer, an International Player Pathway Program participant who has a roster exemption. NFL teams must make moves to reduce their rosters to 53 players by 4 pm EST on Saturday.
