... there's no comparison to Smith. While there is some disappointment in his lack of sacks, one has to be high not to admit that he wasn't an impact player every year he was on this team.

Smith's biggest impact as a Bengal was that his selection kept us from drafting someone more impactful in his place.

I would disagree with this, he was a solid starter and our coaching staff didn't use him correctly. Now is that Smith's fault or is that the coaching staff? Smith was a very good player he proved that when he got with a coaching staff that knew how to maximize his talents. It's sad you sit here and blame Smith when it was clearly the coaching staff and the front office, who didn't utilize him correctly and shouldn't have drafted him here in the first place.

Interesting note on Justin Smith. He played seven seasons for the Bengals and seven seasons for the 49ers. He had 87 career sacks. 43.5 with the Bengals and 43.5 with the 49ers.

In Geno Atkins first seven seasons he had a total of 52 sacks. That's only an average of barely over one sack per year better and nobody would call Geno out as a bust after seven seasons because of his sack totals.

Here are some other comparisons of Justin Smith from Cincinnati to San Fran. He played in 111 games for Cincinnati and 110 games for San Fran

Solo tackles - Cin 315, SF 300
Assists - Cin 155, SF 114
Pass Deflections - Cin 21, SF 9
INT - Cin 2, SF 1
Tackles for Loss - Cin 55, SF 64. SF wins by just over 1 TFL per season

Seeing all this, Smith was a Pro Bowler five times for the Niners and zero times for the Bengals.

Is it possible that Smith wasn't as bad as Bengal fans like to think and maybe he was just in a bad situation with not as much talent around him or as high of a profile as he had in San Francisco? Maybe we expected him to come in and save the franchise and put too much pressure on him? I honestly don't know but I think it's hard to look at those numbers and call Justin Smith a bust even if you think he was a disappointment.

I don't blame Smith. In fact, I mentioned he was a very good player....for someone else.

I blame the pick.

Whether it was because he didn't fit our scheme or he wasn't developed correctly or he wasn't coached correctly....whatever.

He was not a good pick...... FOR US.

Wow that is crazy how equal those numbers but just looking at stats you would say he was a better Bengal than 49ers.

Bengals resign Josh Tupou. DL depth and camp bodies.

Defensive lineman Josh Tupou is back with the Bengals.

The Bengals announced that they have re-signed Tupou on Friday afternoon. It’s a one-year, $2.133 million contract for Tupou, who was tendered as a restricted free agent at the original round level.

Tupou initially joined the Bengals as an undrafted free agent in May 2017 and bounced between the practice squad and active roster as a rookie. He saw action in six games in 2018 before going on injured reserve and started seven times while appearing in every game last season.

Tupou has 36 tackles and a forced fumble in 23 career games.

Cincinnati added D.J. Reader to their defensive line in free agency and selected Khalid Kareem in the fifth round of the draft.

Bengals informed former first-round pick John Ross that they are declining his fifth-year option, per source. Ross now is contractually tied to Cincinnati only for 2020, not beyond.

Totally the right call on Ross. One of the worst first round picks we’ve ever made. Would have made 15mill in 2021. If he proves everyone wrong this year he’ll get paid... but history is not on his side.

Worth noting for comparison, Jags declined Leonard Fornette’s and the Bears declined Mitch Trubisky’s.

From the PFT article on John Ross not getting a 5th year option....

Ross, 25, has had an injury-prone first three seasons. He has played in only 24 of a possible 48 games, making 49 catches for 716 yards and 10 touchdowns.

It isn't like Ross' injuries came out of left field like Jonah Williams' and William Jackson's, he was often injured during his career at Washington. And just to rub some more salt into the wound, picked directly behind Ross at #10.... Patrick Mahomes. Deshaun Watson was taken two picks later at #12. Jonathan Allen was taken at #17 by the Redskins.

Another wasted luxury pick.
