Bengals Report Card

Post by Jmble » Wed Mar 01, 2023 4:14 pm

From the NFLPA
One of our core jobs as a union is to improve the overall working conditions for our players, which includes the daily experience of players at the team facilities away from the lights and cameras.

1,300 of our players provided information to share with one another about their current club, to not only help them make important career decisions, but also help raise standards across the league.

Our goals were to highlight positive clubs, identify areas that could use improvement, and highlight best practices and standards. To learn more about the background of this initiative, read a note from President JC Tretter here.
Overview
The Cincinnati Bengals are ranked 27th in our team guide. The staff itself is well liked, and players credit head coach Zac Taylor for recent improvements that have been made – which speaks to why he grades out as one of the most well-liked coaches in the NFL by his players. However, the facilities and resources offered are ranked far below average.

The Bengals are one of three teams that do not provide dinner to their players; they are also one of two teams that do not provide vitamins, and they are the only team that doesn’t provide supplements. Additionally, players feel that they have some of the smallest hot/cold tubs in the league; they have issues with the showers and toilets not consistently working, and they are the only team that does not have outlets in their lockers to charge devices.

The players who responded to the survey also complained that there is nowhere warm and safe for mothers and kids to go during the game because the Bengals do not provide a family room, unlike the majority of teams. Players reported that wives have sat on the public restroom floor to nurse their babies.

These examples are consistent with players’ opinions, with only 44% of respondents believing club owner Mike Brown is willing to spend money to make the facility better, ranking him tied for 29th in this category.
Definitely some room for improvement here. Here's the Breakdown:

Treatment of Families - Grade F, Tied for Last
Food Service/Nutrition - Grade F Minus, Tied for Last
Weight Room - B Plus, Tied for 13th
Strength Coaches - A - Tied for 10th
Training Room - D Minus - Tied for 27th
Training Staff - A - Tied for 9th
Locker Room - D - Tied for 25th
Team Travel - C Plus - 20th

For a new facility, this is pathetic. Honestly a shocker for me. The only good news here is that Mikey could quickly fix most of these issues with not a ton of investment. For example, adding outlets to the lockers may run $500 a locker on the high end. Lets say you add 100 outlets to the locker room....$50,000. Somewhere in that massive stadium is a room that could be repurposed on game days for a family nursing / comfort suite. Spend $10k a game to set it up and staff it.....$80,000.

You get the idea. Probably less than $1mm solves all of it.

22 plus years isn't really that new. Family restrooms weren't that common back then. And the need for charging devices back then. Almost none existence. And if Mike were to foot the bill for any improvements. Guarantee that money would generate from increased ticket prices.

Riverfront Stadium was 26 years old when the vote happened to build a new stadium. Paycor Stadium will be 23 years old when the Bengals open play in September.

Ok, so there are 3 things that the Bengals could do that would drastically improve their rating and wouldn't be that hard or expensive to do.

1. Improve the family experience, set up daycare, or a family only place in the stadium for practices and games. This wouldn't be crazy expensive, I know in my business we are a family business and family always comes first. Sure we might miss some profits here or there but when it comes to family it's part of our structure. It's not difficult but it goes a long way to having life time respect in the community and employees.

2. Hire a full time cooking staff with a professional chef. Someone that will get the dietary needs on an individual basis, it will do 2 things for you in the long term. 1 help recovery time of these athletes, and 2 help durability by keeping players weight where was at the beginning of the season.

3. Simple facility upgrades like the locker room. 50k to 100k would do wonders to a locker room and in all honesty that isn't an expensive fix.

You do those 3 simple things and their rating towards players sky rocket to top 15 in the league. The idea the Bengals are cheap will take a little longer to get our of the publics heads but if it's not in the players minds who cares.

This goes a little more in depth of the updates being done to the training room. Sounds like they are getting some really good stuff.

Why would Mike Brown care about any of this?

He don't. Think Katie and them spearheading this, be my guess.
I was crazy back when being crazy really meant something.
