Draft Talk

Post by Jmble » Tue Feb 07, 2023 5:26 pm

Figured I'd start a thread for any and all draft talk this offseason. Have a player, a mock, or anything else draft related. This way we can keep things from getting too buried in the other threads.

I was just checking out NFL.com's Mock today from Lance Zierlein.

At 28, they have the Bengals taking Defensive Tackle Calijah Kancey. He's a Junior out of Pitt.
Let's step outside of the box here. Kancey is right at 280 pounds but is ridiculously explosive with A+ rush talent. He can't play every down, but he can impact games from the interior.
Interestingly, he has three Tight Ends and a Running Back coming off the board before we pick.

TEs - Luke Musgrave to the Packers at 15, Michael Mayer to the Lions at 18, and Dalton Kincaid to the Jags at 24.

RB Bijan Robinson is mocked to Buffalo at pick 27.

I'd be happy with a Pass Rushing interior D-linemen. We really need help there.

Yep that or corner back are my thoughts at this point. FA signings may change that between now and the draft.

I doubt with all the contract extensions we have coming up we'll spend very much in Free Agency this year. I can see us signing one or two second or third week tier 2 types to add depth. Maybe a veteran O-lineman or CB etc... but not a starter.

And I've said all along that DL and/or CB will be the early round targets. I would expect them to look at TE, RB and OL in rounds 3-7.

They got lucky with Volson. A late round pick out of a small school. Look for them to try and duplicate that luck again this year.

I would add LB to 3-7 for sure if not a dbl dip if we lose Pratt.

Not sold on Kancey yet. He's right at 6'0 almost 280 and plays DT. I know Geno was relatively small too but....I just don't think he's a 1st round pick.
I was crazy back when being crazy really meant something.

Aaron Donald was on the smallish size too.

Yeah, true. I may buy into him, like I said, but right now I'm just not. We'll have to see how he works out and some tape. I mean why all the sudden is he getting hype??

Here are some that may hover around our pick right now at 29. Give or take a few spots either way. Just a way early list of players to keep an eye on.

Bijan Robinson – TX – RB-6’0 215

Why not the best RB in the draft – but I think hell be picked long before that

O’Cyrus Torrence – FL – IOL – 6’5 350

Wouldn’t be a flashy pick, but would help immediately

Trenton Simpson – Clemson – LB -6’3 225

Guys a beast. Big, fast and quick. Of course, we have Pratt (for now) and Wilson, so not sure this makes sense

Anton Harrison – OU – OT – 6’5 309

Played LT, might be better than Jonah

Antonio Johnson – TAM – S/CB – 6’3 200

One of my favorites and as of right now one of my top 2 or 3 picks. Can play Safety, and Corner and or you can stack him on the line.

Isaiah Foskey – ND – Edge – 6’5 260

We need an edge; just not sure he makes it this far in the first round. Maybe 20 to mid-20’s

Lucas Van Ness – Iowa – Edge – 6’5 275

See above for Foskey

Andre Carter – Army – Edge – 6’7 260

He’s good but is he NFL good, or just Army good?

Here's how the Bengals rank per position and spending against everyone else in the NFL.

QB: 19th 12.4M
RB/FB: 8th 13.7M
WR: 19th 25.5M
TE: 26th 3.0M
OL: 14th 44.8M
DL: 2nd 60.1M
LB: 28th 7.6M
DB: 29th 23.4M
SP: 28th 1.9M

Obviously QB and WR are going to be effected this offseason for sure, but this more then likely will show what they will probably target in the draft as well.

More then likely TE, DB, and LB for sure. DL might be a pick to lighten the load there a little and try and replace some cap money there with a rookie contract.
