Draft Thoughts

Postby Mag » April 29th, 2017, 10:42 pm

All and all, I think we got some potentially great players. The most interesting part is we drafted 3 guys who have excellent return skills. I can't count how many drafts we have waited for them to draft a return specialist. Now Ross, Mixon, and Wilson all have the ability to be great returners.

1. John Ross WR- While I would have preferred other players, I am excited to see him play. A guy with his speed, hands, and agility opposite Green is going to give opposing secondaries fits.

2. Joe Mixon RB- I hate the pick. I just wonder about the makings of a man who could do what he did. People say he learned his lesson and is trying to be better. Yet today, I read Daugherty's article and apparently he threatened an officer who gave him a parking ticket this passed Nov. That doesn't seem like he learned much of anything. That all being said, he's our problem now. I hope the light come on and he grows up. He may have all the talent in the world, but if he's suspended or in prison for doing stupid shit, it doesn't do us any good. If he turns it around, and if he is even half as talented as he seems to be in his film, he will help us tremendously. I don't see how a D can cover our WRs and stop this kid. He may be good enough to take pressure of our fledgling OL.

3. Jordan Willis DE- great value pick. He should be a solid DE. Like a Robert Geathers.

4. Carl Lawson DE/LB- One of my favorite picks. This kid is an animal. He gave my Tide fits. While I am not sure how he fits, considering our coaches have yet to make the LB/DE hybrid player work for us, I am hopeful. He is so quick and powerful. Supposedly Willie Anderson is close to this kid. He basically compared this kid's demeanor and toughness to James Harrison and Takeo Spikes. If he is even half as tough as those guys, that's awesome.

4. Josh Malone WR- Love this pick. I see this guy developing much like Marvin Jones. This is going to be a young, deep WR room.

4. Ryan Glasgow DT- Another solid pick. Not exciting, but solid.

5. Jake Elliot K- We needed a kicker. OK.

5. JJ Dielman C/G- Developmental C. Don't know much about him. I saw some clips of him as a RT. Seems athletic, strong and uses leverage.

6. Jordan Evans LB- I didn't follow OU, so I didn't know much about him. So I watched his highlights. He is super athletic. He has excellent coverage skill and has a nose for the ball. His biggest knock is he seems to lack a certain amount of toughness. I couldn't see that issue in his highlights, but they aren't called highlights for nothing. It will be interesting to see how he progresses.

6. Brandon Wilson DB.KR/PR- He and Lawson are my two favorite picks. This kid is absolutely dynamic. His highlight reel rivals that of Ross and Mixon. I think his main knock is he never really had a true position. He was a RB, S, Nickel, CB, and KR. This guy is going to take Erickson's job as the primary KR/PR. He could very well have the most snaps of any rookie this year between special teams and likely spot duty at DB. The steal of the Draft.

7. Mason Schreck TE- I don't know much about the guy. Likely PS material.

All and all, I am happy with the draft. We got some potentially dynamic players while also filling needs. Everyone, but Mixon, seems to have good character and leadership qualities. Their only miss was not getting an OT that could push to be the top reserve, if not push the other OTs. I am OK we didn't address LB earlier. I think we have adequate talent and depth to get us through the year. We have enough picks next year where we can attempt to address is again.

I pray we find a veteran Olineman once cuts are made. There are always camp casualties and I just dont see both Oogie Boogie and Fisher advancing with their skills to the point where they both are suddenly starters. For that matter, what if Sugartits comes in heavy and underwhelms. We already know Winston isnt an every down player. If Bovine gets hurt we're screwed anyway. So many potential issues here.

I know this is the NFL and next man up is Marvins favorite saying. But I hate to think we went through FA and the draft and did almost nothing to address our most glaring issue.

If not, our best bet is to put Smith back at RT. Then have OG and Fish battle for the left. Then you have Johnson, Westerman, Redman, Dielman, and Hopkins battle for RG.

Personally I'm going to state my case with this and be done!

1 I'm not a proponent of hitting woman, I don't believe a man should hit a woman, but at the same time there are woman out there that deserve it period. I know personally the hardest Ive been hit in fights were by woman and that's back when I was a bouncer.

2 I'm also not a proponent of a woman layer her hands on a man ever. Parents should teach their daughters that if you do that you subject yourself to that man's moral compass.

With that being said I'm pissed at the way ESPN went out of their way to portray Mixon as this super super bad person when their was fault on the instance on both sides and the court case read that their was fault on both sides. The female release her own statement stating that she could have handled the situation much different and should have instigated the entire situation. I'm personally sick and tired of woman throwing punches and getting into fights with men and expecting society to just turn a blind eye and not expect the man to defend himself. I'm by all means not condoning what Mixon did, but he's had to live with this stigma on that campus now for 3 years, and I'm sure there are ill informed people out there that have attacked him and his character in person on multiple occasions because of this instance and he's had to live with that. I'm sure he's grown as a person, and as for Daugherty's article about the parking ticket, I'm assuming you're taking about Brad Daugherty he needs to stick to Basketball and I wouldn't take his word on anything seems ESPN is now more like CNN and wants to throw their political agenda into the mix. Bottom line is here guys dig deeper into the matter at hand here and don't just listen to the fake news cause after I looked into it further Mixon isn't nearly as bad as he's being portrayed as.

I disagree I'd but Smith at Guard and let him the best OG in the game for a few years. He's going to be able to get movement at the point of attack cause he's a mauler and he's do better with a confined space in pass pro.

Was Zimmer playing Smith at RG in Minny? I thought he was solely RT. Just curious.

Fair point on the behavior by some woman. But Mixon walked into the cafe looking for trouble. Yeah, apparently words were exchanged off camera, but that should not matter. Both the woman and her friend were smaller than he was. So this big bad man was going to pick a fight with a woman and her small friend? What did he think he was going to accomplish? Regardless of a person's gender, only bullies and cowards pick fights with those smaller than them.

Correct. As someone who's supported drafting Mixon (because of his football skills, not because he's a good guy) Mixon instigated this incident. From what I read, he and his friends were outside this cafe spouting homosexual slurs at this girls friend. They walked into the cafe to avoid trouble, the responsible thing to do. If Mixon had more brains than brawn, he would have just walked away. Instead, he pursued the girl and her friend into the cafe and again was starting something. Finally, the girl lost her could and slapped him (not a smart move on her part). I think Mixon mostly out of instinct than out of hatred or anything else, struck the girl. As men, we need to have better control of our anger in those situations. That girl's slap was assault but likely didn't hurt him a bit. His punch put this girl in the hospital. It broke her jaw. Had I punched this woman it would have seriously injured her, but Mixon was a football player who was stronger than the average man and seriously injured this woman.

Did he learn his lesson? I'm not sure. He did fulfill his punishment and sat out of college football for a year. I'm guessing he attended anger management courses as well. The instincts that make Mixon successful on the football field, hurt him in these situations. Mixon needs to do his best to avoid similar situations by next time walking away. And the Bengals, need to protect their asset by keeping away from Adam Jones. Pacman does not make wise decisions. He does not walk away and avoid those situations. He constantly finds himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Should Mixon gravitate to Pacman, I can foresee some major trouble for Joe. This alone would be a great reason to cut Jones. But ultimately, Mixon will be responsible for his own actions and needs to hang around with a better group of friends. If he likes money, he should be home in bed at 10 pm every night and find a good woman to keep him home and happy during the offseason. Otherwise, he'll cost himself millions of dollars.

On a side note, watch Mixon holdout because of some crazy contract that Mike Brown comes up with.

1. John Ross WR – I understand the thinking here, you have to stop other teams from double-teaming AJ Green but with excellent players available at bigger areas of need this was something of a luxury pick. Our O-line is a mess and Dalton’s strength is from 25 yards and in. How are we going to utilize the “fastest man in the draft” when Andy’s running for his life and when he does have time, can’t throw a deep ball with great accuracy? Betsy Ross would have been a great pick for a team like Green Bay or Pittsburgh or Detroit who have strong armed QB’s that operate behind strong O-lines. The draft is a bit of a domino game, one poor pick early can dictate other poor picks down the line. We should have taken Barnett or Allen.

Grade C-

2. Joe Mixon - I have deep personal reasons for disliking this pick which I’m not going to get into in a public forum. Suffice it to say this is not the pick I would have made but it didn’t really surprise me either. Mixon had Bengal written all over him from the moment he hit that woman. What does that say about our team…? All that being said, he may turn out to be a great player on the field.

Grade - Incomplete

3. Jordan Willis/Carl Lawson – These are the kinds of make-up picks you make when you should have taken a better DE when you had the chance. (See the domino reference above) The Bengals have had terrible luck with 3rd round D-linemen of late (Devon Still/Margus Hunt/Will Clarke) I have no faith these two will fair any better…

Grade D

4. Josh Malone – Yeah, that’s what we need…, another rookie WR! We have two from last year and just spent our precious 1st round pick on one…so let’s take another! I can’t believe there wasn’t an O-lineman or a LB sitting there that we could have used more. There’s that domino effect again….

Grade D-

4B. Ryan Glasgow – Most analysts describe him as a project and we already have Hardison and Billings coming back as unproven rookies. Again, there wasn’t a player at a greater area of need there..? My God!

Grade D-

5. Jake Elliot – We finally take a good, solid player at an area of need! Jeezus Christ what took you so long!?!

Grade A

5B. JJ Dielman – Finally an O-lineman! Too little too late?

Grade E for effort

6. Jordan Evans/Brandon Wilson – Projects who most likely start the season on the practice squad.

Grade C-

7. Mason Schreck – Never heard of him. See round 6.

Grade C-

Overall Grade C- Bestsy Ross may turn out to be a fine player if he can stay healthy and Joe “Slap happy” Mixon may too if he can stay out of jail. The rest are mostly projects except for the kicker who I expect to be solid.

And that’s the Bengals 2017 draft re-cap in a nutshell.
