Ranking the five most interesting position battles at Bengals training camp

1. Right tackle

On a practical level, what will this look like in camp? My projection would be Jonah Williams getting the overwhelming majority of reps until La’el Collins is full go.

Last year, Collins really struggled out of the gate after being limited in camp. His ability to fully participate will be the first domino that will shape the competition.

2. Third down safety (the Tre Flowers role)

The guy who guards Travis Kelce on 4th down in the last minute of the game is a pretty important role. Dax Hill is their best tight end stopper, but they could rotate that role based on the strengths of the tight ends they face.

Against the biggest tight ends, is Hill, Battle, Scott or Anderson the best option? They'll use a lot of three safety packages, and they have safeties with very different skill sets.

3. CB4 (A starter until Chidobe Awuzie is full go)

The Bengals are optimistic about Awuzie, but DJ Turner, Sidney Jones and Allan George will all get a chance to take this spot on the depth chart. Will Turner’s speed, instincts and explosiveness translate right away in coverage? George may have the most well-rounded combination of size, speed, scheme fit and continuity.

4. Third down running back (the Samaje Perine role)

The guy who tracks Chris Jones on 4th down and also makes big catches is a key role. Is there a way to translate those responsibilities over to the tight ends and make Irv Smith or Drew Sample this year’s Perine? If that’s the case, could Mixon play more third downs and be used more as a pure receiver?

Chase Brown’s focus is on developing as a receiver and pass protector. Trayveon Williams showed flashes in those areas last year vs. TEN and PIT. It could be a classic camp battle between Brown (a bigger, stronger back with less experience in a West Coast offense) and Williams (more shifty, dynamic and experienced in pass protection).

5. The defensive tackle rotation

Who moves inside on third downs –– Ossai, Murphy, Hubbard or Carter? Who flashes the most potential beating interior offensive linemen in one-on-one matchups? Interior pass rush was a weak spot of the defense in 2023 for stretches of the season.

I just got a text from Zac Taylor about getting in the Ring of Honor, that was cool, even in it’s simplicity (a text) it’s the small things of this nature as to why the culture & shift in the organization is so prevalent today. All boxes are checked.

I'm wondering if Joe Burrow is telling the Bengals, I'm not signing until these other key players sign. He's stated over and over publicly that the band is staying together. Just makes you wonder ya know.
